1. How many plates do I need?
One
per physis for angular correction
One
on each side for length control
2. Where is it applied?
Extraperiosteal
- centered on the physis (see technique) at apex of deformity (ies)
3. What sizes are available?
12
mm or 16 mm. center of hole to center of hole
4. Which length should I use?
Whichever
you are comfortable with.
5. Why is it precontoured?
For
low profile - this may be modified as needed.
6. What type of screws? What length?
Titanium
4.5 mm. Cannulated - 24 mm or 32
mm.
7. Is the plate meant to be
permanent?
No,
It should be removed upon correction of the deformity.
8. How long can the 8-plate
be safely left in place?
As
long as is required, pending correction of the deformity. (Typical range is 6 -
18 months).
9. Will the physis close
prematurely?
Not
unless you violate the periosteum.
8. Will the deformity
reoccur?
Possibly;
therefore you should continue to monitor growth. The procedure may be repeated
as often as necessary, as long as the physis is open.
9. What are the indications?
Any
angular deformity that would otherwise warrant an osteotomy.
Any
length discrepancy that would otherwise merit
epiphysiodesis.
10. What are the
contraindications?
Skeletal
maturity, closed physis, physiologic deformities.
11. What is the minimum age
/ size?
For
practical purposes, age 18 months, weight 15 Kg.
12. Is immobilization
recommended?
Not
necessary - immediate weight bearing and motion are encouraged.
